🌿 Baby Alocasia Care Guide
(Elephant Ear / Jewel Alocasia Varieties)
Alocasias are stunning tropical plants prized for their bold, dramatic foliage. Baby Alocasias can be a little more sensitive while establishing, but with the right care they will thrive and reward you with beautiful new growth.
🌱 Your Plant Purchase Information
You will receive 12 healthy baby Alocasia Frydek plants, each with established roots and ready to grow on beautifully in your home.
This equates to just $14.16 per plant, including postage and GST.
Plants are currently potted in 66mm nursery pots and will be sent in their original pots to minimise stress during transit.
🌞 Light
Prefers bright, indirect light
Can tolerate gentle morning sun, but avoid harsh afternoon rays
Low light may cause slower growth and smaller leaves
Variegated Alocasias require brighter light to maintain colour
✨ Tip: Strong indirect light is key for healthy, steady growth.
💧 Watering
Keep soil lightly moist, but never soggy
Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry
Always use pots with drainage holes
Reduce watering slightly during cooler months
⚠️ Overwatering is the most common cause of root rot in baby Alocasias.
🌱 Soil
Alocasias need a chunky, well-draining aroid mix.
Ideal mix includes:
Premium potting soil
Perlite or pumice
Orchid bark or coco chips
Optional: a small amount of sphagnum moss or charcoal
This provides airflow while still holding enough moisture for delicate roots.
🪴 Pot Size
Babies do best in a small pot (2–4 inches)
Oversized pots hold excess moisture and increase rot risk
Repot only once roots begin circling the pot or outgrowing it
🌡 Temperature & Humidity
Loves warmth: 18–28°C
Avoid temperatures below 15°C
Enjoys higher humidity (60%+) for best leaf development
A humidifier or pebble tray can be helpful, especially in winter
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed during active growth (spring and summer)
Use a balanced liquid fertilizer at ½ strength
Fertilize every 3–4 weeks
Pause feeding in autumn and winter
✨ Tip: Baby Alocasias are sensitive — less is more.
🍃 Dormancy Note
It is normal for Alocasias to slow down or drop older leaves in winter.
As long as the bulb (corm) and roots are healthy, new growth will return in warmer months.
✂️ General Maintenance
Wipe leaves gently to keep them dust-free
Remove yellowing leaves with clean scissors
Rotate the pot for even growth
Avoid frequent moving — Alocasias like stable conditions
🐛 Pests to Watch For
Alocasias can attract:
Spider mites
Thrips
Mealybugs
Inspect leaves regularly, especially underneath, and treat early if needed.
⚠️ Pet Safety
Alocasia is toxic if ingested, so keep out of reach of pets and children.
