๐ฟ A Stunning Collector's Alocasia with Beautiful Variegation
Alocasia Heart Balloon Variegated is a beautiful and unusual collector's plant, admired for its distinctive heart-shaped foliage, rounded leaf structure and striking variegation.
Its broad, balloon-like leaves can display gorgeous combinations of deep green, pale green, cream and white, with unique splashes, marbling and contrasting patterns.
Unlike the narrow-leaved Alocasia varieties, Heart Balloon is prized for its fuller, rounded foliage and bold tropical appearance. As the plant matures, its leaves become increasingly impressive, making it a standout addition to any rare plant collection.
Please note: Variegation varies naturally between plants and leaves. Colouration may change as foliage matures, and future variegation cannot be guaranteed.
๐ฟ Alocasia Heart Balloon Variegated Care Guide
๐ Light
Prefers bright, indirect light.
Gentle morning sun is generally tolerated.
Avoid harsh afternoon sunlight.
Low light may slow growth.
Pale variegated sections may be more sensitive to direct sun.
โจ Tip: Introduce your plant gradually to brighter conditions after arrival.
๐ง Watering
Keep soil lightly moist, never waterlogged.
Allow the surface to begin drying before watering.
Always use pots with drainage holes.
Reduce watering during cooler months.
โ ๏ธ Overwatering can cause root rot, especially in young plants.
๐ฑ Soil & Growing Medium
Use an airy, well-draining mix containing potting mix, perlite or pumice, orchid bark and charcoal.
Our Desert Jungle Plant Co Premium Indoor Plant Mix is suitable for established plants.
Young tissue culture plants may benefit from coco-perlite before transitioning to a chunkier mix.
๐ชด Pot Size & Repotting
Use pots suited to the root system.
Avoid oversized pots that retain moisture.
Repot when roots fill the pot.
Handle delicate roots carefully.
๐ก Temperature & Humidity
Ideal temperature: 18โ28ยฐC.
Avoid prolonged temperatures below 15ยฐC.
Humidity of 60โ80% encourages healthy growth.
Protect from cold draughts.
Maintain good airflow.
๐ฟ Fertilising
Feed during active growth with balanced liquid fertiliser.
Use half strength for young plants.
Fertilise every 3โ4 weeks as needed.
Reduce feeding when growth slows.
๐ Dormancy
Alocasias may slow growth or lose older leaves during cooler months. Healthy corms can produce new growth when conditions improve. Reduce watering during dormancy.
๐ฟ Understanding Variegation
Heart Balloon Variegated is prized for its beautiful, unpredictable leaf patterns, which may include splashes and marbling in contrasting shades of green, cream and white.
New leaves may change colour as they mature.
Some leaves display stronger variegation than others.
Heavily variegated sections may be more delicate.
Variegation may increase, decrease or revert.
Future variegation patterns cannot be guaranteed.
โจ Tip: Every new leaf is a surprise! Young plants may develop more noticeable patterns as they mature, although this is not guaranteed.
โ๏ธ Maintenance & Pests
Wipe foliage gently, remove yellowing leaves and rotate occasionally for even growth.
Watch for spider mites, thrips and mealybugs. Inspect foliage regularly and treat infestations promptly.
โ ๏ธ Pet Safety
Alocasias contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic if chewed or ingested. Keep away from pets and children.
